Circumniutation and growth

Film 5 The film presents 21 hours of growth of two ca. one-week-old sunflower seedlings in the dark. The seedling on the left side strongly circumnutates and grows, while the seedling on the right grows with a similar rate, but circumnutates very weakly.

It is assumed that circumnutations are an inherent consequence of growth. However, recent studies carried out in our laboratory indicate that, in some environmental conditions, changes in circumnutation are not proportional to changes in the growth rate. For example, lighting the sunflower during the first few hours strongly inhibits circumnutation but does not inhibit growth (Stolarz et al. 2008).
